Arguineguin
Arguineguin is the oldest settlement on the south coast of Gran Canaria. Once a small fishing village, the population has now grown to 3,500 inhabitants and the main industry is tourism, although fishing still thrives in Arguineguin.
A popular hotel in Arguineguin is the beautiful 4-star Arguineguin Park by Servatur, which has been voted Arguineguin’s best hotel by guests several times. By the way, Arguineguin means ‘still waters’ in the language spoken by the indigenous people of Gran Canaria, the Guanches, hundreds of years ago.
Arguineguin beaches in general
The largest beach in Arguineguin is Playa de Perchel, located on the southern edge of town. A lovely sandy beach with cafés behind the beach, but unfortunately it overlooks a large cement factory 1 kilometre to the south. Better views are offered at the centrally located Playa Las Marañuelas, which is the most popular beach in Arguineguin.
Another option is to enjoy one of the man-made beaches near the large hotels. These beaches are better protected from waves and everyone is allowed to use them. The most beautiful of these beaches is Playa de Costa Alegre. Most beaches in Arguineguin have facilities such as sunbeds, showers and toilets.
Child-friendliness
The most child-friendly beach in Arguineguin is Playa de Costa Alegre. The beach is well protected from waves and the water is shallow. At Playa de Perchel there is a nice playground.
Water sports activities
There are no water sports activities at the beaches in Arguineguin.
Restaurants at the beaches
There are restaurants and cafés very close to the three beaches mentioned above. It’s also possible to buy a sandwich and take it to the beach.
Arguineguin as a holiday resort
Arguineguin is a relatively large holiday resort, but very relaxed. There is a good selection of hotels, shops, restaurants and cafés. The town has two shopping centres, of which La Marea Shopping Centre is the newest. It has modern shops and a large HiperDino supermarket. The older Ancora Centre consists of a lot of small shops and restaurants.
The main attraction in Arguineguin is the fishing harbour where there is an early morning auction. From the harbour there are popular tour boats to Puerto Rico and Puerto de Mogán. The tour boats are one of the reasons why Arguineguin is such a well-visited resort.
The local market in Arguineguin takes place on Tuesday mornings and is the largest market in Gran Canaria.

Playa de Perchel (also known as Playa de Arguineguin) is located at the bottom of the map. The most visited beach Playa Las Marañuelas is in the centre of the map, while the smaller Playa Costa Alegre is at the top of the map. The famous Anfi del Mar beach is a little further north.
